Glynco, Ga. – Last week, the Federal Law Enforcement Training Centers (FLETC) kicked off the highly anticipated 19th session of the Department of Homeland Security Leadership Academy (DHSLA). “As a senior leadership instructor, facilitating and teaching multiple DHSLA classes has been a profound privilege. Witnessing the wealth of collective wisdom brought by each participant is truly remarkable. We take pride in developing this course, alongside our students, and find immense joy in seeing DHSLA alumni embark on remarkable journeys equipped with the knowledge they have gained,” stated Senior Instructor, FLETC Leadership Instructor, David Lau.

The DHSLA traces its roots back to 2012 when discussions first began to establish a specialized academy for homeland security leadership. Since its inaugural class in 2015, held at FLETC's Glynco headquarters, the academy has been a cornerstone in developing the next generation of state and local law enforcement leaders.

Sheriff Daniel Hartwig, the Department Director of the Manitowoc County Sheriff’s Office in Wisconsin, is participating in the DHSLA for the second time as a mentor. He states, “FLETC/DHSLA has opened the door to a new network of law enforcement professionals and training opportunities. Recently, I was able to host the FLETC PSAT course in my home county which benefited not only one of my communities’ schools but helped provide high-quality training to local officers. I feel the training has helped mold me into a better leader for my staff.”

Under the leadership of FLETC Directors Thomas J. Walters (2018-2023) and Benjamine “Carry” Huffman (2023-present), along with the dedicated FLETC staff, the DHSLA has continually evolved to address the ever-changing landscape of homeland security challenges.
