PAPUA NEW GUINEA – Recently, representatives from the Federal Law Enforcement Training Centers (FLETC) and the Department of State’s Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement (INL) visited Papua New Guinea (PNG).
During their visit, FLETC and INL representatives met with members of the PNG criminal justice system, including the Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary (RPNGC), the Bomana Police College, the Department of Justice and the Attorney General, the PNG Customs Service, the Department of Transportation, and the National and Supreme Courts of Papua New Guinea. They also met with United Nations agencies, Australian partners, and members of the Embassy Port Moresby team.
The FLETC and INL team identified areas of cooperation and assistance with PNG partners who are on the frontlines of advancing Prime Minister Marape’s law and order agenda. FLETC, with funding from INL, is prepared to support capacity building in basic law enforcement training, in-service programming, and curriculum strengthening. Another area of interest is the standardization of police professionalization initiatives across Papua New Guinea’s 20 provinces.
FLETC’s National Capital Region Assistant Director Mark Adamchik remarked, “Upon meeting and interacting with our RPNGC counterparts, it became abundantly clear that our shared vision and values would create a strong foundation for cooperation going forward.”
INL assists the Government of Papua New Guinea in strengthening the criminal justice system through practical skills training for law enforcement officers, coast guards, environmental authorities, financial intelligence units, and judicial institutions in accordance with the U.S. Pacific Partnership Strategy. INL focuses on improving local capacity to fight transnational crime. This includes human and narcotics trafficking and advancing reforms to create a justice system that meets international standards, enhances regional stability and security, and helps support the PNG’s Vision 2050 and the Boe Declaration.
A component of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, FLETC provides career-long training to law enforcement professionals to help them fulfill their responsibilities safely and proficiently. Through strategic partnerships, FLETC partners effectively with law enforcement and criminal justice agencies worldwide to combat transnational criminal threats that challenge our communities and countries.
