Statement from Secretary Mayorkas on the Retirement of FLETC Director Thomas J. Walters and the Appointment of Benjamine “Carry” Huffman as FLETC Director
WASHINGTON – Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro N. Mayorkas released the following statement today regarding changes in leadership at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Centers (FLETC):
“The long and distinguished career of Tom Walters can be measured in lives saved and communities strengthened. Over the course of 44 years, beginning with the U.S. Border Patrol and most recently as the Director of Federal Law Enforcement Training Centers, Director Walters has been the very embodiment of public service and commitment to our country. FLETC, and the Department of Homeland Security as a whole, have benefited immensely from his steady leadership and dedication to mission. I have personally benefitted from his counsel and partnership. For over 50 years, FLETC has prepared the federal law enforcement community to safeguard the American people, property, and institutions, and under the leadership of Director Walters, its reach and importance have only grown. The Department will miss him, but we are grateful for his more than four decades of service, and that of his family who has served alongside him.”
“As Director Walter prepares to retire from service, I am pleased to announce that Benjamine ‘Carry’ Huffman will assume the role of FLETC Director effective September 24, 2023. We are fortunate to have someone with his extraordinary experience, skill, and commitment take on this responsibility.”
“For more than three decades, Mr. Huffman served our nation with the U.S. Border Patrol and U.S. Customs and Border Protection, including as Deputy Chief of the El Paso Sector; Chief of the Strategic Planning and Analysis Directorate at Border Patrol Headquarters; the Executive Assistant Commissioner of Enterprise Services for CBP; the Acting Chief Operating Officer for CBP; and as CBP Acting Deputy Commissioner.”
“Please join me in thanking Director Walters and congratulating Mr. Huffman. Mr. Huffman will ensure that the FLETC trainings and curricula will continue to reflect the changing nature of the homeland security threat landscape and keep our workforce and local law enforcement ever equipped for mission.”
