Internet Investigations Training Program (IITP) at FLETC-Glynco
GLYNCO, Ga. - Federal Law Enforcement Training Centers (FLETC) conducts Internet Investigations Training for local, state, tribal and federal law enforcement officers in Glynco, Georgia.
The Internet Investigations Training Program (IITP) is a two-week course designed to provide investigators, analysts, and individuals serving in a law enforcement capacity with the basic understanding necessary to conduct internet-based investigations.
“Investigating Internet crimes is one of the most beneficial, yet complex tasks facing the law enforcement profession today," emphasized IITP staff. “The widespread adoption of the Internet and social media has transformed the way society interacts, requiring a technical approach not commonly seen with traditional crime.”
IITP is taught in two instructional modules: investigating internet crimes and conducting online investigations. The first module focuses on investigations and operations centered around the use of the internet. The second module incorporates the Internet and its many communities that are often exploited for criminal activity daily.
In the beginning of the course, participants are issued an investigative laptop where they learn how to properly configure it and how to setup investigative profiles and personas. They are also provided with all the software necessary to complete online investigations. The software includes system archival and interrogation tools to conduct a live, active interrogation of online data.
During the course, participants are taught how to examine historical internet data such as emails and website posting to identify the author or originator conducting that internet activity by looking at system artifacts and attributes.
IITP enables the participant to develop the skills necessary to investigate Internet-based crimes in a legally accepted manner, while utilizing open-source and proprietary tools. At the end of the program, participants perform various practical exercises to reinforce skills learned during the course.
“The biggest takeaway is that our students walk away from the course with a good foundational skillset on the basics of internet-based operations,” said IITP staff. “At the end of the program, our students acquire a new skillset in advanced computer skills, digital operational security principals, all-sources information gathering techniques, dark-web operations, and a basic understanding of cryptocurrency and open-source tracing techniques.”
IITP is one of the more popular programs provided by FLETC and is offered six to 12 times per year. Export trainings for IITP are also available for various agencies around the country with the average class size of 24 workstations. IITP contributes to FLETC’s mission of providing career-long training to law enforcement professionals to help them fulfill their responsibilities safely and proficiently. Through strategic partnerships, FLETC prepares the federal law enforcement community to safeguard the American people, property, and institutions.
